Denied by Insurance? Here’s What to Do If Your Claim Gets Rejected

Understand the written reason, gather relevant evidence, and ask what review options are available.

A claim denial can be frustrating, especially when your home still needs work. Start by understanding the reason for the decision and the information the insurer used.

Step 1: Read the reason before deciding what to do

Ask for the denial in writing and the relevant policy explanation. The issue may involve the cause of damage, an exclusion, the amount of loss, or other policy terms.

A denial is not proof that the roof needs no repair. It also does not establish that additional review will change the coverage decision.

Step 2: Obtain a documented construction opinion

A qualified roofing contractor can assess accessible areas, photograph observed conditions, and compare the proposed repair scope with any insurer estimate.

Ask the contractor to identify specific differences and provide evidence for each. General disagreement is less useful than a clear description of the condition, location, and work required.

Step 3: Ask about the review process

Contact your insurer and ask what additional documentation it will consider and whether another inspection is appropriate. Do not assume that a different adjuster must be assigned or that another visit guarantees approval.

You can keep the request straightforward: “I have additional roofing documentation. Please explain how I can submit it for review.”

Step 4: Match the evidence to the issue

If the question concerns storm-related damage, provide the relevant inspection findings. If it concerns quantities or construction work, provide an itemized estimate and the supporting measurements.

Keep the discussion tied to the written decision. An estimate addresses the work and cost; it does not change the policy’s terms.

Step 5: Consider the appropriate next route

  • Additional documentation: Submit specific photographs, measurements, or revised estimates for the insurer to review.
  • Further review: Ask about the insurer’s process and any applicable deadlines.
  • Outside help: Contact the Nebraska Department of Insurance if you need help understanding how to raise a concern. If representation is needed, review the role and fees of a properly qualified professional.

Step 6: Keep everything organized

Save policy documents, denial letters, estimates, emails, temporary-repair receipts, and photographs. Keep a written log of calls with the date, representative’s name, and what was discussed.
