3 Questions to Ask About Hail Damage and Your Roof Claim

Three questions to ask about hail damage, inspection areas, and the rest of your homeโ€™s exterior.

Hail damage is not always obvious from the ground. An inspection gives you a chance to ask how the roof was assessed, what was documented, and which parts of the property were checked.

These three topics can help you prepare for that conversation.

1. What does the damage mean for the roof?

A roof may have damage without an immediate leak. Ask the inspector to distinguish the conditions observed, including impact marks, granule loss, and any damage affecting the shingle itself.

Photographs should show the finding in context. A dent or surface mark does not, on its own, establish whether the roof needs replacement or whether a policy covers the work.

2. Which roof areas were inspected?

Inspectors may document hail impacts within a measured test area. Ask where the areas were located, which slopes were evaluated, and how the findings relate to the rest of the roof.

A single impact count should not be treated as a universal rule for your roof or policy. Request the actual inspection findings and the reason for the proposed repair or replacement scope.

If your contractor finds additional damage, ask them to provide clear photos and location notes for the insurer to review.

3. Was the rest of the exterior checked?

A complete discussion may also include gutters, downspouts, window screens, flashing, roof vents, air-conditioning equipment, garage doors, and siding.

Damage to these items can be documented alongside the roof findings. It provides context for the inspection; it does not automatically prove the cause, extent, or insurance coverage of roof damage.

If the findings leave questions unanswered

Ask for an explanation of the assessment. Share additional photographs or a contractor’s estimate when relevant, and ask what review process is available if you disagree.

Construction requirements and insurance coverage are separate questions. Ask your contractor about the work required and your insurer about the applicable coverage.
