How to Check for Signs of Roof Damage After a Storm

Know which exterior and interior signs deserve a closer look after hail or high winds.

A roof does not have to be leaking for a storm inspection to be worthwhile. Some conditions are visible from the ground; others require a closer professional assessment.

Use this checklist to decide what to document and discuss. No checklist can confirm storm damage or insurance coverage on its own.

1. Start with visible changes

Once the area is safe, look from the ground for missing shingles, displaced materials, dented gutters or flashing, and debris. Note new granules collecting at downspout outlets and any new stains inside the home.

Do not climb onto the roof to investigate. Record what you can see safely and share it with the inspector.

2. Ask about hail-related findings

Hail inspections may include impact marks, bruising, granule loss, and damage to metal components. Ask what each finding shows and whether it affects the material’s function.

Not every mark has the same cause or significance. Clear photographs and an explanation are more useful than a conclusion based on appearance alone.

3. Include wind damage in the inspection

Wind can leave missing, creased, or displaced shingles. Ask whether the inspection found concerns with shingle attachment or sealing, including areas that are difficult to see from the street.

Leave hands-on checks to a roofing professional rather than lifting or testing shingles yourself.

4. Check the surrounding exterior

Vents, gutter guards, screens, downspouts, trim, and siding may show damage too. Document these observations so they can be considered alongside the roof assessment.

A dented exterior item is a reason to ask questions, not automatic proof that the roof needs replacement.

5. Look for interior moisture concerns

New ceiling stains, peeling paint, bubbling drywall, and musty smells deserve attention. Note where they appear and whether they change after rain.

A roof leak is one possible source. Condensation and other moisture problems can produce similar symptoms, so the source should be checked before deciding on a repair.

6. Request a documented consultation

Ask what the inspection will include: perimeter observations, accessible roof areas, photographs, relevant test areas, gutters and soft metals, and any areas that could not be checked. Video or drone documentation may be useful where appropriate.

Alfa Y Omega can explain the visible findings and the next construction steps. A Complimentary Consultation helps you understand what needs attention and what questions remain.

Address changes while the details are clear

Keep photos and notes rather than waiting for a larger leak. If you plan to make an insurance claim, check the policy’s reporting requirements promptly.
